Hugh O'Donovan, Reg. Psychol. P.s.S.I.  MSCP.  MBPsS.  has been invited to deliver a Masterclass

at the 3rd European Coaching Psychology Conference in

City University, London 13th & 14th December 2011.

Title.           Mindfulness based Cognitive Behavioural Coaching for individuals and Teams.

Abstract.

Cognitive Behavioural Coaching is based on the premise that if you change the viewing, you can change the doing.  In the coaching conversation this is done by raising awareness around the link between our automatic negative thinking, emotions and behaviour and creating alternative possibilities for the coachee or group which are more positive, empowering and energizing.

The body of evidence from the literature supporting its efficacy is increasing, however, the challenge of developing and maintaining focus during and after the coaching session raises interesting possibilities as to what practical coping strategies (mindfulness) can the coach teach the coachee / team to exert greater control, manage stress, foster resilience and enhance both life and work performance . For the coach interested in team / group work this is even more challenging in identifying and surfacing dysfunctional thinking and emotions within the group.

As an integrated approach mindfulness adds another technique to the cognitive behavioural model, where a deliberate and purposeful focus on the present moment facilitates a non-engagement with negative and potentially demotivating thoughts at both an individual and group level.

This Masterclass is designed for coaching psychologists who, based on sound psychological theory relating to both cognitive behavioural coaching and mindfulness, wish to add another dimension to their coaching practice and at the same time add some useful tools to their coaching toolkit.  During this Masterclass you will be invited to “The Restaurant of Distortions” amongst other interesting places.  This integrated approach also has practical application in developing resilient individuals and groups in a more mindful workplace.

This way of consciously relating, in which everyone attempts to bring out the best in others rather than to have power over them, is a posture the entire human race will eventually adopt. Think of how everyone's energy level.... will increase at that point. (Redfield, 1993, p219)   This is the Moral Science that is Coaching.

Could it be true that our lives in all their diversity, challenges and uncertainty, succeed or fail one conversation at a time?  If you are interested in discussing the implications of this insight and how it applies to you and your work, then give us a call.
